Handgun Comparison – SIG Sauer P226 vs. Beretta M9

SIG Sauer P226

SIG Sauer P226 Handgun

The SIG P226 handgun was designed to replace the Colt M1911A1, the standard issue sidearm for the U.S. military from 1911 to 1985. During the Army’s XM9 Service Pistol Trials, only the SIG P226 and the Beretta 92F (M9) performed satisfactorily.

Although the P226 had a lower per-unit cost than the 92F, Beretta won the contract because its overall cost, including magazines and spare parts, was lower.

Since then, SIG Sauer has produced two smaller versions of P226: the P228 and P229. Today, both of these compact but heavy handguns are used by law enforcement agencies and military organizations worldwide.  Some gun owners say that choosing a SIG is a just matter of personal preference, but the 229 was machined from a solid piece of steel whereas the 226 has a stamped steel slide.
