PTSD Therapy for Veterans – Counseling

PTSD therapy for veterans often takes the form of counseling or therapy. Although psychotherapy is not the only way to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), talk therapy is often recommended. By working with a trained therapist, veterans can discuss combat experiences and learn coping skills.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term PTSD treatment in four parts: cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, relaxation techniques, and PTSD education. Typically, CBT for PTSD requires 8 to 20 sessions. That’s just an average, however, and some post-military patients may also require medical treatment.

CBT therapists may differ in their approach to PTSD therapy. For example, some counselors may emphasize cognitive therapy over exposure therapy. Others may stress PTSD education over relaxation techniques. All VA therapists are trained providers, however, typically with experience in behavioral clinics.
