PTSD Treatment for Post-Military Personnel – Medications

PTSD treatment for post-military personnel may involve medications or psychotherapy. Often, VA doctors combine medical care with counseling (talk therapy) to provide both immediate and long-term benefits. By alleviating patient symptoms and teaching coping skills, doctors and VA therapists are making a difference.

There are several types of medications that can help to relieve PTSD symptoms in veterans. These include antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and Prazosin. Known as Minipress, Prazosin is a drug for hypertension that blocks the brain’s response to norepinephrine, a neurochemical that acts like adrenalin.

So which PTSD medications are the best? That’s a decision for individual veterans and their doctors to make. Along with the relief of symptoms, there are potential side effects to consider.
