Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Prolonged exposure therapy (PE) is a former of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) where veterans talk about traumatic combat events until these experiences are no longer painful. Military patients also visit places that are safe, but that they have avoided in order to prevent emotional suffering.

Studies indicate that PE has been an effective form of psychotherapy for PTSD sufferers who served in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Although most veterans experience some relief from their PTSD symptoms, PE is more effective for veterans who have experienced specific types of emotional trauma.

For example, veterans of the Persian Gulf War who feared an attack with biological weapons still experienced higher levels of anxiety that Vietnam vets who were traumatized by conventional warfare such as ground attacks and aerial assaults.
